News for the Week of 11/2/16

Our November Open House is this Thursday!  Do you know someone wondering if SMS is the right place for their family? Please encourage them to attend our Open House on Thursday, November 3rd at 6:30pm.

An RSVP is appreciated, please email Toni Chagnon,   tchagnon@stmarysimsbury.eduk12.net  or call the school office at 860-658-9412.

Lawn signs should be returned to the School Office.  If you were kind enough to display one of our Open House signs on your property, please do return the sign and metal frame to the school office.  We do reuse these for future events.

Again this year, our school is participating in the Jack Bannan "Turkey Trot" non-perishable food drive. Collection boxes are located in the primary unit and the middle school and also outside the school office.  Turkey Trot donations will be accepted until Friday, November 4th.   See below for additional information about the "Turkey Trot's" collection of frozen turkeys & monetary donations on Wednesday, 11/16.

SMS will be open for a regular day of school on both Election Day,  Tuesday, November 8 and Veterans' Day on Friday, November 11.  Simsbury PUBLIC schools are closed on Election Day so SMS students that use bus transportation may arrive home significantly earlier than usual on 11/8.

Group Class Photos for Students in PreKindergarten, Kindergarten - Grade 7 will be taken by Lifetouch Photography on Wednesday, 11/9.  All students in Kindergarten - Gr. 7 should be dressed in full formal uniform for this photo.  Lifetouch will also take retakes and "makeups" for students that were absent on picture day.  If a retake is needed, the student must bring the original portrait package to school and may bring a change of clothes for the individual picture.  The uniform of the day must be worn to school and once the picture has been taken.

MOMS in Prayer.  Praying with other moms lightens our burdens and provides hope, strength, and encouragement for our daily lives.  Please join us once a month for one hour of conversational style prayer to lift up our children, their teachers, and the school staff before the Lord.  This month's meeting will be on Wednesday, November 9th, after drop off from 8:30 to 9:30am in the Lower Church Library. Please contact Christine Sinopoli at christineds1213@yahoo.com for more information.

Veterans' Day Observance - Please Join Us.
On Friday, November 11, 2016, our children will be observing Veterans' Day with a special program after morning prayer.  The program will include a performance by our school's advanced band. We would like to invite families and any veterans to our program that day.  Please contact the school office if you plan to join us. Military uniforms are welcome and would be appreciated by our students. We hope to see you then!

becoming proficient with their iPads.
The Mornings are Chilly!  We've seen our first snowflakes and many of our mornings are quite chilly.  Please keep in mind that unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or it is inclement or slippery, our students do wait outside before our 8:40am opening bell and do go outside for recess.  Please be sure your child(ren) have appropriate outdoor apparel and remind them to wear it!  We see a lot of cold hand, cold heads, and cold arms and legs!   Please be sure to check out the Spirit Wear's fleece outer jacket if you are looking for a coat that can span 3 seasons.  This jacket may not be worn in the building but is perfect for morning arrival and recess!  Click here to visit the Spirit Shop.

SMS Stars - Congratulations to the SMS musicians that participated in last weekend's FMI Eastern Regional Band Concert at St. James School in Manchester.  These students are now eligible to audition for the FMI All State bands that will perform at a concert at Central Connecticut State University and outside Lincoln Center this spring.  We commend these students for their dedication to their practice and for the extra effort required to participate at the regional level since these bands do require an audition and rehearsals on Friday nights and Saturday mornings.  We thank their parents for taking the time to drive these students to their practices at St. James in Manchester and, of course, extend our thanks to our school's FMI instructor, Mrs. Debbie Morse.
Regional Band participants included:

Hannah K., Grade 7 - Flute I
Francesca C., Grade 7 & Sophie G., Grade 6 - Clarinet I

Halloween Fun at SMS - Students enjoyed Halloween costume fun on Friday, 10/28, and we loved seeing all the creative outfits.  Our 8th grade students chose a "secret service" theme.  Click on the Halloween 2016 tab at the top of the blog to see even more Halloween photos.
