There will be NO jump rope club this Friday, 4/26, due to the Superhero Challenge!

Financial Aid Application Deadline for 19-20 is this Saturday, April 27 -The deadline for application for financial assistance for the 19-20 school year is rapidly approaching.  In order to be considered for financial assistance, an application with SmartAid must be completed.  The deadline for SmartAid application is this Saturday, April 27.  Click here for additional information.   Click here for instructions for the SmartAid application.



IOWA Testing begins for students in grades 3 -7 on Tuesday, April 30th. 

From Tuesday, 4/30/19 through Tuesday, 5/7/19, students in grades 3-7 will be taking the IOWA Tests of Basic Skills. While these tests are one important indicator of a student's academic progress, we do strongly encourage you to help your child(ren) approach these tests with a positive outlook of relaxed confidence. Unlike many regular assessments, these tests cannot be "studied" for and the best preparation for them is a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast.

Students that may feel anxious should be reminded that these tests are just one measure of progress. Please also keep in mind that it is very important for students to arrive at school PROMPTLY by 8:40AM on IOWA testing days. Late arrivals will not be permitted into a classroom if the testing has begun until there is a break. Additionally, we ask that you try to avoid scheduling doctor and dentist visits during the testing period. Students cannot be called out of class during a testing period and no announcements will be made into classrooms during testing.



Grandparents' & Special Person's Day- including May Crowning - is Right Around the Corner - Friday, May 10th!  Again this year, are looking forward to welcoming grandparents and special people to school for their special morning!  Look for more details next week but the event is schedule for Friday, May 10th.  Guests are invited to arrive in time for morning prayer and light refreshments and will have an opportunity to visit classrooms before transitioning to the beautiful May Crowning hosted by our second grade.


Campus Connection Update!


Our Parish Connection Project is coming to completion. Please note that even though the final paving is now complete, parking lot striping is still underway and we continue to use the north door as our temporary main entrance.  When we are ready to begin using the new parking area and new main door, we will notify everyone. The new building will be called The Magowan Center in honor of Kathleen Magowan who gave the parish a substantial bequest some years ago.

The Parish Religious Education Office will be housed in a newly furnished area of the Lower Church called The Forcucci Faith Formation Center, in honor of Anna Forcucci who also left the parish a substantial bequest. On Sunday, June 2, at the 11:00 AM Mass, Archbishop Blair will dedicate our new facility.

Donors will be recognized on a Memorial Banner in the Magowan Center. If you have not contributed to our project, there is still time to do so. Stop by the Parish Office with your contribution or send it by mail with the designation “St. Mary’s Campus Connection.”

The new building provides our school and parish with (1) an elevator that makes St. Mary’s church handicap accessible, (2) more parking with an access road that connects the south and north parking lots, (3) new rooms that will be used by parish and school, (4) a spacious gathering area where we can socialize before and after Mass, (5) a new baptistery and reflection space; (6) a beautiful rosary patterned floor with all the mysteries of the Rosary; (7) stained glass windows from St. Bernard’s, our mother church, (8) new Parish Office and Religious Education space.

News for the Week of 4/17/19






The Hot Lunch Ordering Period for May & June is now open.  Please note that this order period takes us through the close of school. Orders will be accepted via the Educonnect Parent Portal through Friday, 4/19/19.  Payment should sent into the school office when your order is completed.  This is your ONLY opportunity to order hot lunches for May & June.  No late orders can be accepted.  





IMPORTANT CALENDAR UPDATE - SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED THURSDAY, 4/18.  This closure is necessary so the final paving and parking lot striping can be accomplished safely and efficiently.






School will be closed on Good Friday, 4/19 and Easter Monday, 4/22.

CHOICE Program Reminder - All families must complete their 18-19 CHOICE tuition obligation no later than Tuesday, April 30th.  All purchases made beginning May 1, 2019, will be credited to the 19-20 CHOICE year.  Statements were sent home with students on Wednesday, 4/3.  

If your family has not completed your CHOICE obligation, you may either purchase sufficient CHOICE cards to complete the remaining balance or send a check payable to SMS CHOICE with "18-19 CHOICE Balance" in the memo section.  If you have questions about CHOICE or your family's CHOICE obligation, please contact Michelle in the school office.



Gr. 8 Fund Raising -  

Mixed Bag Fund Raiser - Orders will be accepted through next Wednesday, 4/24/19.  Anyone purchasing from this Fund Raiser will automatically be entered in a raffle featuring some great "mixed bag" prizes.  Extra order forms are available in the school office.  You may also place an order on-line.  Click here. Thanks in advance for supporting our 8th grade as they work to defray costs associated with their graduation.




SMS Stars


Our congratulations to Thomas C, Gr. 5.  Thomas came in third
in the Knights of Columbus State Championship Spelling Bee.
We think that's just AMAZING  - A M A Z I N G - AMAZING!



Our robotics team won first place at the first ever Archdiocesan robotics competition on Saturday, 4/6.  We had two robots, Ted and Ella. Ted, driven by Ryan G., Gr.6, Michael C., Gr. 7 and Ben Z., Gr.5, was the winner in alliance with the grade 8 girls team from St. Bridget school.

It was lots of fun and everyone learned a lot. Many thanks to Gina Raymond and Jeff Prausa for their efforts and coaching of the whole team.

News for the Week of 4/3/19








TONIGHT - Wednesday, 4/3/19, is Open House for Prospective Families - Open House will begin at 6:30pm in the Parish Center.  If you know someone who is wondering if SMS is the right place for their family or perhaps a family with an energetic 3 year old that might enjoy our new 2 morning per week program, please invite them to attend.  Your recommendation is our best advertisement and we are happy to reward your efforts via our Family Referral Program.





School will be closed from Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12 for spring vacation. Relaxed Uniforms may be worn when students return from vacation, beginning Monday, April 15.




Family Enrollment Packets for 19-20 were sent out via email on Friday, 3/1/19.  Your response was requested NLT Friday, 3/29/19.  If you have not completed your Family Enrollment Form and returned it with your $250 Family Enrollment Fee, please do so ASAP.  Courtesy reminder calls will begin after our Spring break.   If you have any questions or if you believe Family Enrollment Form is in error, please contact the school office. Thank you for your continued partnership with our school.

Thursday, 4/18, will be a 12:45pm early dismissal for Holy Thursday.  There will be NO PreK Enrichment or Aftercare.

Last Chance to Order Your 2019 Yearbooks - The SMS Yearbook is a great way to preserve and enjoy all of this school year's great moments and memories.  The yearbook features photos of every student and of all important school activities, sports and clubs.  You may order online until April 7, using our school code - 9415319.The price per yearbook is $35.  Yearbooks are distributed in June immediately prior to 8th grade graduation and must be pre-ordered.  Please call the school office with any questions.

SMS Stars

Congratulations to Thomas C. on his victory in the grade 5 section of the
 Regional Knights of Columbus spelling bee last Sunday. 
Thomas will now move onto the state level competition.

Megan D. and Marisa M., Gr. 6,  participated in the USA Hockey New England District Futures Development camp in Burlington, VT.  They joined girls from all over New England for a weekend of games, clinics and training.

Munson's Chocolates Are Available for Pickup NOW!  Thanks to all who supported the Gr. 7 Munson's Chocolates fundraiser.  Chocolate orders are available for pickup now in the school office. Please make every effort to pick up your order prior to Spring vacation.  The office is a very warm room when is "closed" as it will be for the vacation week.

Granny's Attic 2019 is Coming! Donations are now being accepted & Volunteers are still needed! The Farmington Valley's best tag sale will be accepting donations now through Sunday, April 7.  Granny's Attic will be open to the public from Monday, April 8- Saturday, April 15 at the old Wagner's Showroom on Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury.  For more information, including items that will be accepted for donation and opportunities to volunteer to help with this event - click here.

  **Your support of Granny's Attic directly helps our school.  While it takes place before the annual carnival, Granny's Attic is considered part of the carnival and SMS receives 50% of the proceeds of the carnival. Many volunteers are needed to setup, staff and clean up Granny's Attic. Please consider donating your time to Granny's Attic along with any other donations you may have.**
