Veterans Day at St. Mary School
This morning students, faculty and community members honored
veterans in a prayer service and patriotic ceremony. Together we were able to
celebrate the retirement of Mr. Phil Mikan from the Coast Guard Reserves and
recognize Mr. Kuziak as representatives of all veterans who have served our
country so well. Mrs. Virginia Gore, 5th grade teacher, opened the
event by thanking all veterans from Lexington/Concord to Fallujah.
The St. Mary
School Advanced Band played a rousing rendition of the
Star Spangled Banner and
the student body sang a medley of armed forces hymns before the first grade,
led by teacher Mrs. Sheri Jehnings, led the entire audience in “God Bless
America”.
Mr. Mikan spoke to the group expressing his thanks to his
family and the families of all service men and women and presented his children, Andrew and Marissa, each with a plaque from the Coast Guard. Each grade
presented Mr. Mikan with handmade cards commemorating the occasion of his
retirement. A brief film recorded to the music of the song “You Raise Me
Up” was shown and then student Sophie Petrarca played a solemn version of
“Taps” before everyone left quietly.
