News for the Week of 5/1/19

It was a SUPER evening!  From Queenie's Cocktails & Kona Ice to the Inflatable Obstacle Course and face painting, our event was a great success!

A Cosmic Thank You to all of our Community Superheroes that came out Friday night to support our 1st Annual Superhero Challenge & Corn Hole Tournament!  It was an awesome night of family fun and challenges!

You can still support the event and our school! Spring sports are here & summer is on its way, show your school pride while hydrating with a SMS Logo Water Bottle!  Please send cash or check for $20 per water bottle to the school office.  Please put "water bottle" in the memo section and indicate color of choice (red or blue) and which student(s) should receive the bottle(s).

There is still time to buy your duct tape strips to catch Mr. G in Spiderman's web! Due to rescheduling we will be sticking Mr. G to the wall on a day in May! 1 Yard Strips are $5.00 each  - buy your child the opportunity to stick Mr. G in his web!  Please send cash or check payable to St. Mary's School with "Spiderman Tape" in the memo section to the school office.

Congratulations to James F., Gr. 7 and his dad, 1st place winners of the Corn Hole Tournament and Nicholas G's (Gr. 6) Team for coming in 2nd place!

Congratulations also to all of our raffle winners, an email was sent to all of our winners earlier this week.

Special thanks to all those who worked hard to make sure the evening ran smoothly and assisted us with planning, setup, raffle, concessions, check out and cleanup.  Every volunteer is a real SMS superhero!

IOWA Testing is underway for students in grades 3 -7.

Students in grades 3-7 are taking the IOWA Tests of Basic Skills through Tuesday, 5/7/19. While these tests are one important indicator of a student's academic progress, we do strongly encourage you to help your child(ren) approach these tests with a positive outlook of relaxed confidence. Unlike many regular assessments, these tests cannot be "studied" for and the best preparation for them is a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast.

Students that may feel anxious should be reminded that these tests are just one measure of progress. Please also keep in mind that it is very important for students to arrive at school PROMPTLY by 8:40AM on IOWA testing days. Late arrivals will not be permitted into a classroom if the testing has begun until there is a break. Additionally, we ask that you try to avoid scheduling doctor and dentist visits during the testing period. Students cannot be called out of class during a testing period and no announcements will be made into classrooms during testing.

Bake Sale This Weekend!  Our 8th grade will host a bake sale after all Masses this Sunday, May 5th.  Please stop by for some delicious treats and support our 8th grade as they work to defray costs associated with their graduation activities and field trip.

Kids In Business Sale Days at Lunch on May 8th & 9th - Young entrepreneurs have been hard at work creating wonderful products! Please support St. Mary’s Kids in Business! We’ve created products that will make great gifts for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and upcoming birthdays.  Students can shop in the Parish Center during lunch time on May 8th and 9th. At least 50% of each student’s profits will go to charity. Only cash can be accepted.  Click here to preview available products.

Grandparents' & Special Person's Day- including May Crowning - is  next Friday, May 10th!  Again this year, we are looking forward to welcoming grandparents and special people to school for their special morning!  Guests are invited to arrive in time for morning prayer and light refreshments and will have an opportunity to visit classrooms before transitioning to the beautiful May Crowning hosted by our second grade.  Guests are free to depart after May Crowning.

The Spring Band & Vocal Concert is coming soon!  Please mark your calendars for Monday, May 20th. Since all students in grades K-8 will perform in the vocal portion of this concert and because performance is part of each student's music grade, attendance is considered mandatory .  If a student is unable to attend, you must contact Mrs. Williamson.  There will be a dress rehearsal at 2pm and the performance will be at 7pm in the Parish Center.

May School Mass -  Students will attend the 12:15pm Parish Mass on Ascension Thursday on May 30th.  All are welcome to attend this Mass.  Please remember that no PE uniforms should be worn to Mass.

Hot Lunch Payments - If you have not already done so, please promptly send in your payment for your May/June Hot Lunch order.  Those with an outstanding balance have been sent a reminder note.  Please check backpacks and then send in payment asap.  Thanks!

Thanks from Meig's Point - All donations to the 6th grade's collection for the Meigs Point Nature Center at Hammonasset beach have been delivered. Thanks to all who sent in donations.  Every little bit helps preserve Long Island Sound and helps the nature center continue its educational mission.
